I grilled chicken tonight on my LP gas grill and for some reason the outside layer of the chicken on the grill side, between the grill marks, turned black after only a light cooking. I don’t mean burnt I mean a sooty-looking residue. I have never seen this before. It also seemed like I was smelling more gas than usual. What happened?

    The heat was to high.

Also this is common with over marinating chicken. Did you marinate it longer than 2 hours??

Olive oil burns quickly also, if that was used, could be the culprit.

    Good luck next time.

Your grill is burning too rich (not getting enough air to the air/fuel mixture). Somewhere between the knob and the burner there should be a hole to let air in to mix with the propane. The hole is probably closed, plugged or otherwise covered up.
