What you want is a diet based on the glycemic index. There are carbs out there that will effect your blood sugar less and are low on the glycemic index. At the same time, raise your protein intake.
The best thing you can do to start is start a food journal and honestly look at how many calories you are taking in, and of what. Most people forget about fluid calories and don’t realize that they can be taking in as much as 2-300 % of the USRDA.
Read the material. You can still eat certain carbs in moderation.
Best of luck

Why waste money on overpriced, processed junk?
Eat real food! Stay away from white food;bread, flour, rice.
Go with whole grain. And limit your sweets. If you get into the habit of eating fruit,it will satisfy you better than any candy bar will.
I will be 52 in a few months and I am in better shape now than ever.
I don`t go to a gym.I use exercise dvd`s and I workout 6 days a week.And,no,I don`t kill myself.I do yoga at least twice a week.I strength train 4 times a week and I walk for cardio.
Go to collage video`s and check out their dvd`s.I personally use Jari Love and Leslie Sansone.
Also, you can join Sparkpeople.com for free.Get your recommended calories and nutrition plan there. They also have free exercise video`s.I use their site every day.It helps to have buddies with the same goals in mind.
Good Luck and Don`t give up!
