I am trying to cook healthier. A recipe calls for oil. What can i substitute for oil? I know I can use olive oil, but anything else? Also what is the ratio? As in how many cups of whatever it is equals however many cups of oil the recipe calls for.

Nut oils are fairly healthy choices along with olive oil. The only caveat is that they have a much lower temperature where they can burn if you are using them to saute or pan fry.

In some recipes I substitute stock (chicken or veggie) in place of oil, and you can usually substitute Pam type sprays to cut down on the amount of oil in a recipe.

In baking, you can substitute apple sauce or small quantities of butter for oil.

It is best to use olive oil, as it is actually good for you. You really can’t get away from using oil, just use a little less. butter is good too (specially flavor wise), but olive oil is more healthy.

I’ve used melted margarine for oil and that works – but not the fluffy kind in the tub – use blue bonnet or one of the "baking’ margarines or you can substitute melted shortening. Same amt just melted.
    Good luck.

there is no real subsitute for oil. Olive oil takes some getting use to the taste. I don’t use much oil. If you are using a lot of recipes that call for oil, you need to readjust your whole way of cooking. 1 qt of oil last my family about 6 months. i mainly grill, bake, or broil food. I use pam spray to put on my grill and in my pans.
