Is it okay, I mean what makes a cooking apple different. Some receipe’s I have seen do not need cooking but ordinary. I was going to make something tomorrow, which has a light sponge on top of the apple’s. It is a baby/toddler friendly receipe.

If you don`t have any cooking apples, the only one which you can use as a substitute is Granny Smiths, as these are the next tartiest to a cooking. You do need to add a little sugar, but do it gradually and taste in between then you won`t make it too sweet.

The difference is that cooking apples are softer and juicier. If you use regular apples, they are harder and it will take longer to cook and won’t be as juicy.
You should always mix the apples up so that when the pie is cooked the apples do not dis-ingrate into nothing. That is the trick to making a big big high apple pie. if you use say; two red delicious to one Macintosh your pie would be big and heavy but still be juicy and flavorful…
Good luck!

What are cooking apples? I’ve never heard of them. I just use apples, green red or yellow, I’ve never had a problem.

Cooking apples differ in that they are firmer and hold their shape, as in apple pie. But if you are making what sounds like a casserole of some type, it will be alright. The eating apples just cook faster so watch it or you will end up with applesauce.

yes I use eating apples if they are not getting eaten as they are. I stew them in diet lemonade and as they are already sweeter than Bramley apples I don’t add extra sugar
