My cats Ben and Iris, both have minor heath problems; Ben is heavy and gains weight very rapidly because he has a big appetite; and my little girl Iris (is inbred) tends toward getting diarrhea, drooling, and having very bad breath. They have both been helped by my feeding them a meat diet, but I get tired of cooking for them every day, twice a day, especially since they get very impatient while I’m cooking. I also worry about them getting all the nutrition that they need.
I recently bought Iams cat food.I found that when they eat Iams, they have fewer problems than with any other dry food. I picked a low carb, high protein formula for them.
Now I discover, on Y/A, that Iams is accused of cruel animal testing! Is there some dry or canned food that I can feed the lil’ people? Or can you advise me on a meat diet that has all of their essential nutrients?
Thank you all-
I have been giving them Cat Milk with the lactose removed and taurine added- but I’m not sure how much of it they need.
I haven’t had Iris looked at by the vet- she only seems to drool when she is happy- like when she’s kneading or cuddling and purring. I have looked at her teeth- they look fine, no red gums, obvious tartar, cavities, or inflammation. I was assuming her bad breath comes from her stomach. I will get her teeth and stomach looked at-
The stomach thing she’s had since kittenhood. It didn’t and still doesn’t seem to effect her much- she still ran and played, and grew very rapidly once I got her. I had assumed that she had food allergies from being inbred (I got her from a Cat Collector); however, I should talk to the doctor about it.

IAMS has been under strong attack from a vocal minority that may not have their facts correct. I have posted a link that gives the IAMS side of the story. Remember, P&G was the target of a group that claimed their symbol on the side of their packages was a demonic symbol, which had no basis in fact.
(disclosure: my cats have always been on IAMS, and I have no financial stake in P&G, who own the IAMS brand)

All the commercial companies are guilty of the same things unfortunately.
You shouldn’t be feeding any dry food tio any of your cats. As far as cooking, that is ok for a snack but it is not balanced and has to be specially prepared. Many feed a special prepared raw diet which is optima;l. If you don’t want to do that, then canned foods without gravy are what is best
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrdiant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process them. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don’t use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn’t have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php

Try James Welbeloved or Hills Science Diet, both are truely excellent, also give canned fish and fresh boiled fish and chicken from time to time, if you find cats are a pain in the kitchen shut the door on them.
Have you checked out your cats teeth with a vet?
good luck,

I too have been avoiding P&G products bc of their testing cosmetics and household products on animals.
Iams is now owned by P&G.
However, this problem with the Iams testing is an entirely different issue. This is about feeding cats/dogs Iams and only Iams and keeping records that those animals don’t die and are healthy on that food.
Allegations have been made that one lab hired by Iams was not treating their dogs right. Insufficient care, no exercise, etc. It says that when questioned, Iams moved the animals where they could not be found. Iams replied that they investigated, verified the complaint, cancelled their contract with that lab, and moved them to another lab where they would be cared for. They no longer do business with that lab.
All of that happened several years ago. Someone still insists on bringing it up every few months, for some reason.
Now, I’m in no position to say that Iams does everything right, but I notice that Iams has partnered with ASPCA to develop a new program to aid adoptions.
So I think that you have to take those old emails about the alleged abuse with a large grain of salt. If Iams works best for your kitties, feed them Iams.

In pet foods the more you pay the better the quality of protein sources and fiber in the food. Have you had your cat Iris looked at by a vet for drooling and bad odor from her mouth? She possibly needs a teeth cleaning from your vet and also have them check her for Stomatitis. If your cat has this it could potentially make it hard for her to eat and can be very painful. Have her seen for this.

Iams is made by Proctor & Gamble and it’s pretty hard to find a product they DON’T make – detergents, shampoos, cleaning products etc.
The "test" those products on rabbits – putting things in their eyes to see how much damage the product can do
I’m concerned when you say you are cooking for your cats – any meat you give them will not have taurine in it – that is an essential amino acid which cats cannot make in their bodies (as people and dogs do). Without taurine in their diet the cats can go blind or develop fatal heart conditions.
All commercial cat foods have taurine added to their product and that’s why cats shouldn’t be fed dog food as taurine isn’t added to that.
Their are lots of choice in good cat food – Wellness, Eagle Pack, Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Nature’s Variety and Nature’s Logic, CA Natural, Felidae, etc.
I have not purchased anything from P&G for the last 15 years.
