My mom bought me a slow cooker so I cud cook healthy meals that will be ready for me when I come home at the end of the day. The problem is that I don’t know the basic science of cooking w/one & my mom isnt much help. I looked up recipes but most of them involve foods I can’t eat. I can’t eat beef, white flour, white sugar, and canned foods because I have juvenile rhumatoid arthritis. So can anyone give recipes or basic concepts of how I can use things around the house to make food with my slow cooker. Thanks.

I agree with Chris. Search the recipes and find a few with ingredients that you can eat, and after making a couple, you’ll get the basic gist of meat to veggie to liquid ratio. You can make almost anything in the slow cooker. You could look up "crock pot meatloaf" and use ground turkey instead of beef. I hear people rave about slow cooker meatloaf. Good luck!

a slow cooker, or crock pot, doesn’t use direct heat so you can cook with very little water or fluids and still not burn it. Since you can’t eat beef, go for chicken. You can cook it whole, or pieces. You can put it in frozen or thawed. Just remember to use minimal water, usually about a couple of inches in the bottom would be fine. Chop up some carrots, celery, potatoes. Add some light spices like rosemary or basil and put it on low all day. Since you can’t eat beef, I highly recommend some of my favorite…..beans and ham hocks! Soak pinto beans overnight then in the morning, rinse them, put them in the crock pot with two nice ham hocks. Fill it up to about half with water, add some salt and pepper and put on low all day. You;ll get home and smell the most wonderful aroma!! Crap, now I wanna make some beans and ham hocks!

Not knowing what you can and can’t eat makes it difficult to suggest something…However…
Chicken…pork…ham and different vegetables can be put in the slow cooker and put on low..and when you get home you have dinner waiting… doesn’t require a lot of work…season and some broth and let it cook…serve it over rice or noodles…

My mother-in-law has severe food allergies, so she has most of the same limits on what she can eat. Hates it, but she eats really healthy! =0) Crock pots are awesome for beans … just add water up to almost the top of the cooker and let ‘em go all day. It cooks chicken great, too …on meat and veggies though you have to remember not to add too much water … the water in the food will add to the water in the pot and you don’t want it to overflow. You can make a soup or stew with veggies (celery, carrots, and onions make traditional chicken broth), chicken, rice (fry a cup with a tsp. of oil in a pan so it turns light brown -then add it), and I usually put potatoes, zucchini, corn, tomatoes and cilantro…to make it southwest. Tips: Herbs are stronger in a crockpot, especially dried herbs, so use less. Veggies should go on the bottom, they take longer than the meat to cook. Except for beans, add a little salt and pepper to stuff for taste. If you want browned meat, you have to brown it in a pan real quick before you put it in the crockpot. Have water in the bottom 1/3 of the pot for most things. Hope this helps!
