My boyfriend and I are college students who have definitely been eating like it lately. And, in return, we feel like it. So we’ve decided we’re going to try to live a healthier lifestyle, with a large part in concentration of watching what we put into our bodies more.

I LOVE to cook, but it’s hard to get some of the healthier options when you’re a college student’s budget. How do you save money and still cook healthy meals in your home?

We’re trying to get away from the "meal-in-a-box" type foods because of the high sodium and processed food content, however, we are open to ideas on how to make them more healthy!

Weekly or bi weekly meal planning. You can choose items that are healthy and can be used in a second dish later…like a turkey breast. Whatevers left over can be used later in the week for a pot pie. That’s just one example, find a good website to help you plan meals.

You can also use your local grocer’s weekly ads to plan your meals around whats on sale.

salad, fruit, vegetables are all much cheaper then meat products and candy, its easy, one easy thing to do that isnt much but adds up, is to stop drinking pop, drink water or gatorade. instead of bring some chips for lunch as your snack, maybe bring an apple or an orange. vegetable soup for dinner or lunch is also healthy.

    Real oatmeal vs Instant
Small amount of meat and lots of veggies in a stir-fry
Big pot of homemade soup vs canned
Pot of homemade turkey chili (freezes well)
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on wheat bread is full of cheap protein.

Check out http://feastonthecheap.net – they break down recipes by total cost (under $10, under $20, etc etc) and calculate cost per serving. They also make an effort to make healthier substitutions on many of the recipes on the site.

it’s difficult to eat healthy and be on a budget, but it can be done. Concentrate on vegetables, pastas, and legumes (beans, lentils, etc.)

By making a large pasta casserole you can each eat for several days for almost nothing, specially if you limit the cheeses that you put in it. Make a large pot of bean soup, even with a small amount of ham, and you will be surprised how filling and cheap it can be.
