Vincent Vegan and Marc Sage offer a weekly podcast discussing all of the ongoing things in the diet and weight loss world – we focus mostly on Low Carb and Vegetarianism but we discuss everything – here is something I found on the internet that I thought you guys might enjoy! The world’s most beautiful and famous have swallowed his advice. He wrote one of the biggest selling diet books of all time, and it was based on his extraordinary belief that you could eat as much as you desire and still lose weight. His name was Dr Robert Atkins, author of the Atkins new diet revolution. To some Dr Atkins was a hero, to others his diet was scientific heresy and potentially deadly. In a series of ground breaking experiments Horizon investigates the truth behind the most controversial diet in history. Does the Atkins diet really work and is it dangerous?

High fat content in low carb diets may SEEM harmful but the harmful effects have historically been observed in those who consume lots of carbs concurrently. The other thing that people bash up low carb diets for is the high protein content, claiming it impairs kidney function. It’s true that patients with kidney failure is advised to go on low protein diet but that’s with the context where someone has EXISTING renal diseases.

As such most of the fats that one consumes on atkins would simply be burned as fuel in the place of carbs. Furthermore there are plenty of good quality randomised trials which have shown good evidence for the use of low carb diets and some that looked at cardiovascular outcomes(measured as cardiovascular events/strokes)found lower rates of heart attacks/strokes among thsoe on low carb diets. Not one good quality study has ever found a solid evidence that low carb diets are harmful.

It’s painful to watch how these academics make hypothetical assumptions about the ‘potential’ detrimental effects of fats. Fats are bad when consumed with lots of carbohydrates, as the body is built such that it prefers sugars as compared to fats and thus in the presence of carbs, the fats that one consumes would be stored etc. However in atkins diet the carb intake is limited and thus the body essentially RELIES on fats(as a matter a fact this would comply with the first law of thermodynamics)

Why dont they ever talk about what kind of weight ppl lose with this kind of diet? Fat, muscle, water, bloodvolume etc. If you lose twice as much but most of it is muscle or water…what´s the point?

@JesusGodHolySpirit3 it makes you lose fat, not weight. fat is what you want to lose, not muscle which is what you lose on low calorie, low protein and fat and high carb diets.

Why does this “impartial” special show a fat person tearing into some meat every time they ask a question about the diet?

    Lipid hypothesis is bunk!

Type B (small) LDL is the culprit behind heart disease, not cholesterol as a whole.

The body’s cells are made of cholesterol. We need it to live!

@HotKebab Omega fats definitely are healthy, but what is even more interesting to me is all the studies that are now showing that saturated fats, which have been demonized for the past 40 years, are actually not harmful to our health. There’s a lot of data out there to prove it, and when you think practically, it makes sense.. When ancestral hunters killed their prey, they ate everything.. the meat, the fat, tendons, all of it. In fact they would’ve been less likely to have omegas available

@joeylodes How long did it take you if you don’t mind me asking? Your story is pretty inspiring.. I had 40 pounds to lose (lost 10 so far, 3 weeks in) and am looking to be around 195 as well… Awesome job! Thanks for sharing with us.

@hellangelassia Most all studies on atkin’s and atkin’s style diets show that it improves health, and is quite safe.. even more so than low – fat diets.

@Aprilshowersss Hahaha.. definitely need to increase your water intake haha. I had that problem my first couple weeks, but started drinking lots more water, and included more fibre in the veggies I was eating… fixed me right up haha.

@1980Jonno Exactly… and the thing people don’t realize is, when you eat primarily high protein and fat, your hunger dissipates quite a lot. Think of how someone feels after eating a bowl of cereal, or a 6 ounce steak… both can have the same amount of calories, but after cereal they are still hungry, and after steak they are satisfied and full. Even tho it seems you eat more meat / fat, most of the time people on low carb are actually consuming less calories.

@gdh7260 That is rediculous. Do you realize how much meat asians eat? Not to mention the total lack of sugar and refined carbs in their diets. The only high carb portion of their diet is rice. The rest of their diet (especially chinese) is very high in meat (in which they eat every part of the animal) and a wide variety of vegetables. Not to mention obesity rates are growing in both china and japan because of more availability in high carb snack foods and sugary processed foods in cities.

The people citing the law of thermodynamics are just IDIOTS. Just because calories can’t dissappear, doesn’t mean they all have to end up in FAT STORES. Your body has thousands of uses for energy that you put into it, and fat storage is just 1 of them, which is regulated by insulin, which is secreted when you eat carbohydrates. When you eat carbs + fat, it uses the carbs for energy and stores the fat.. when you eat no carbs, your body uses fat and protein for energy, with no storage.
