When you add something such as bourbon into a cooking pan, will it only create a flame if you light it with a match, or will the heat of the stove be enough to light it. Just don’t want any surprises when cooking this recipe I found!: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bourbon-street-buffalo-wings-recipe/index.html

Kind of a stupid question, but just want to make sure. Thanks!

Thanks guys, but the thing is that I don’t want to create a flame. The recipe called for some bourbon, so I was just wondering how I can add it without getting a flame.

Generally, you will need to either light the liquor or at least tip the skillet so that the fumes ignite. But occasionally, especially when using high proof liquors, the fumes will ignite without special effort.

For safety sake, always remove the skillet from the stove eye before adding the liquor.

Im pretty sure that you have to light it with a match or some sort of spark in order for it to flame. Be careful if you have a gas stove not to get the flames in the pan or that will cause your boubon to catch fire.

When you add the liquor, tip the pan slightly to the flame underneath and allow it to burn out. If you don’t have a gas stove then by all means light it at the side. It depends what you are cooking though as to whether or not you need to do this. If you are adding the alcohol to a casserole then you don’t need to. Alternatively pour the alcohol into a metal soup ladle and light it this way, when the flame dies then add it to your dish. The flavour is much better when you cook it off.

If you pour the alcohol away from the stove then light with a match or long lighter you’ll be ok. if you do it over the stove with an open flame you do risk a sudden burst of flame from the vaporization of the alcohol which is flamable.

It won’t catch fire on its own. It needs to be lit with a match or catch a spark to become inflamed.

It certainly shouldn’t alight just warming in the pan, but for safety’s sake keep in mind that the warmer it is, the easier it will catch.
