There are two very famous colleges for chefs: The Culinary Institute of America and Johnson & Wales University. Both of these colleges will teach you everything about being a chef, and also, about running a restaurant or food service company.

You have penty of time, so why not check out their websites. They will have a place on the website to sign up for more information. You can register and they will send you lots of brochures and stuff so that you can learn all about how they operate. Don’t get stuck going to some 6 month school that will only prepare you to be someone else’s kitchen slave!

I think it is a good suggestion that you get a job worlking part time in a kitchen now, so that you are sure you like this kind of work… but there are some different kinds of cooking – a busy restaurant is not the same as a chef cooking for a nursing home, or a school, or working for a company that prepares food for a supermarket or frozen foods, etc. You might try some different jobs….

    Good luck.

the Culinary Institue of America is good
Johnson & Wales University has a program
mainly look at any colleges that have artsy backgrounds because they’ll most likely offer courses there.

I wouldd take a class at an adult or Community College first.

I woul definitely get a job in a Restaurant now just to make sure you want to do that type of work.

I am thinking about that same sort of thing, as well. One thing is that you must make sure to explore your other options as best you can, really. Do you like politics? Acting? Maybe something involving social work or teaching? I mean, try to really understand how you feel about all sorts of occupations before you dive into this one.

The first step, other than experience in a restaurant, which you should like if you wanna cook, is going to a local community college. Try some culinary classes and get the basics from what they say then try some original stuff of your own. Feel comfortable making emulsions and baking cakes and add your own spice to it. That’s my plan at least. Start small, then build your way to the top!
